The Federal Bar Council Offers Free 2-Year Membership for Government and Nonprofit Attorneys in the Second Circuit

New York, NY, October 21, 2024 — The Federal Bar Council, a professional association dedicated to promoting excellence in federal practice and fellowship among Second Circuit federal practitioners, is thrilled to offer a two-year complimentary membership to attorneys working in government and nonprofit organizations.* This initiative is part of the Federal Bar Council’s ongoing efforts to expand the diversity of its membership; a goal identified during its 2019 strategic planning process.

In 2023, the Council convened its Diversity Task Force, chaired by John C. Quinn, Hecker Fink, LLP and Cynthia Fernandez-Lumermann, Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and comprised of Gerardo Gomez Galvis, Morrison & Foerster LLP, Chaka LaGuerre, formerly of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, Patricia Miller, formerly of the NYC Law Department, Frank H. Wohl, Lankler Siffert & Wohl LLP, and Aja G. Stephens, Federal Bar Council. The task force is focused on increasing diversity—not only in terms of race, ethnicity, age, gender, and sexual orientation, but also practice areas underrepresented in its membership. “We know that diversity in thought and experience strengthens the practice of law and enhances our members’ ability to serve the public and the profession,” said Sharon L. Nelles, President, Federal Bar Council Board of Trustees. “This membership drive reflects our commitment to building our inclusive community of federal practitioners who contribute to the evolving landscape of federal law.”

As part of the recruitment efforts, the Federal Bar Council will be hosting a reception on November 14, featuring a Fireside Chat with Zachary W. Carter, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District, and former Corporation Counsel of New York City. Attendees will have the opportunity to network, learn more about the Council, and hear from Mr. Carter about his legal career.
